INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY |
COLUMBUS DAY
The second Monday in October, known
commonly as Columbus Day, and more recently
in some areas as Indigenous People's Day, is
recognized across many different countries
as marking the arrival of explorer Christopher
Columbus in the Americas. For some groups,
the arrival of Columbus to the Americas is a
chance to celebrate their European heritage.
While for many of the Americas' Indigenous
Peoples, the holiday carries a more somber
tone.
Due to the devastation experienced by native
populations upon the arrival of Europeans,
many areas in the Americas have begun to
observe Indigenous People's Day in honor
of the hardships the Americas' indigenous
peoples have endured as a result of the arrival
of European settlers. Indigenous People's
Day originated in 1992 to coincide with the
500th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the
Americas and has grown rapidly in popularity in
the Americas since 2004.
Some areas in the United States, such as Akron,
Ohio sought to balance the two holidays by
observing North American First People's
Day during the first Monday of October, and
Columbus Day (renamed Italian-American
Heritage and Culture Day in 2020) on the
traditional second Monday of October.
Last, but
not least, we
all secretly
look forward
to bringing
back all those
amazing
leftovers!"

THANKSGIVING
Thanksgiving is held on the second Monday
in October, which celebrates the harvest and
other blessings of the past year. Outside of
Canada it is often called Canadian Thanksgiving
to distinguish it from Thanksgiving in the United
States, held on a different date. Thanksgiving
has been officially celebrated as an annual
holiday in Canada since November 6, 1879.
