City orchard apple sponge, oat crème
fraiche, granola
The orchard project was started about 4 years
ago. The area was overgrown with shrubs
and weeds and the students from transitions,
development and cityworks spent 6 months
clearing it by hand. With help from the catalyst
fund we bought ten heritage fruit trees from
the children's orchard. We also salvaged a few
trees from our original project in the Gorbals
and were donated a tree from an clachan cafe
in return for produce. Students did all planting
and the orchard is used to teach all aspects
of growing. All growing is organic and we use
our own seaweed and comfrey fertiliser and
organic pest control. We are now also using
compost from the rocket to complete the
circular economy. Currently we have fourteen
trees- mostly apple with plum, cherry and two
nut trees. We also grow raspberry, blackberry,
blackcurrant, gooseberry, artichoke, strawberry
and runner beans on this site. Our average
annual harvest from city gardens is about 165kg
which the orchard contributes to. We share the
produce between scholars, student bistro and a
clachan cafe. We had interest from a company
called millers larder this year to provide produce
for COP 26. Our aim is to help cut the college
carbon footprint and teach urban gardening to
cityworks students with the hope of giving them
experience in the green economy.
Gustave Lorentz Gewürztraminer
The first mention of the Lorentz family in the
commune of Ribeauvillé dates back to the
end of the Thirty Years' War in the second half
of the 17th century. They were innkeepers or
coopers as well as 'gourmets', the old name
given to wine merchants, which afforded them
an important status in the local community.
Deeply committed to environmental protection,
in 2009 Lorentz started the process of
conversion of all our owned vineyard property
(33 hectares) to organic viticulture. The
heritage handed down to us by our forefathers
is priceless and we want to be able to offer
the same gift to our children by leaving them
healthy, vigorous soils, capable of producing
fine wines for centuries to come.
