Long Covid is a phrase you probably hear a lot at the moment, but do you
know what it means? In the media recently there was lots of reports on Derek
Draper, Kate Garraway's husband, stating he had died from long covid, but
what they really meant was that he died from damage to his organs caused
by covid. Long Covid is when anything from a huge list of 209 symptoms
appears or continues 12 weeks after a person has had covid, and lasts for
over 8 weeks, but they don't know what is causing the person's symptoms. People with Long Covid
can experience fatigue and breathlessness; cough; "brain fog" or difficulties with memory, finding
words and thinking clearly, and heart palpitations, as well as dizziness when standing.
The difficulty for lots of people with Long Covid is that until covid, there hadn't been much research in
symptoms people suffer after viral or bacterial infections, so a lot of people were told their chest x-ray
was normal, or their blood tests were fine, and went home thinking that their symptoms were all in
their head. However new research shows that there are many mechanisms that covid can cause
illness, including changes in your muscle fibres or immune system, causing high levels of
inflammation in your body or brain.
An Australian Doctors' Group recently presented the view that the term "Long Covid" should no
longer be used, as rates of moderate to severe illness were similar 1 year after covid or other viral
infections like flu. Long Covid sufferers I work with aren't so much bothered by what it's called, as
making sure there is sufficient research and services to support everyone with post-viral/bacterial
illness.
If you or someone you know has Long Covid, remember that you can shape future health care
by getting involved in any of the 31 Long Covid studies the NIHR is currently running
(www. bepartofresearch.nihr.ac.uk).
