staff training and liaise with GPs and other external medical and dental services.
Staff receive full and comprehensive training as well as a competency-based
assessment by a nurse before being able to administer medication. To meet
young people's specific health needs, staff may undertake specific additional
training and may also support young people in attending consultants or
accessing hospitals or other specialist services.
Nutrition and a healthy diet is a key focus with a range of strategies used to
motivate and encourage young people to eat a healthy balanced diet. Prior's
Court supports young people's cultural dietary needs as well as requirements
such as gluten and casein-free diets (with the written consent and agreement of
a medical consultant).
Vocational skills and work placements
We focus on developing vocational skills in line with individual needs, interests
and aspirations in areas such as horticulture; animal husbandry (at the Prior's
Court School Countryside Learning Centre); administration & finance; retail &
business enterprise; catering & hospitality; trade skills; and housekeeping.
These areas form the "vocational streams" which are taught within Prior's Court.
The development of vocational skills is
enhanced through opportunities to
participate in on-site work experience
activities. We have a fully functional,
industry-standard bakery on-site where
young people with these skills and
interests can develop their work-based
skills and, where possible, we partner
with off-site work placements to allow
our young people to practice their skills
in other settings within the wider
community.
Community inclusion
The development of skills for each
individual to successfully participate
within the local community is a key
focus. To support the individual's
development, the community is
accessed regularly in a range of ways
including the use of local facilities such
as shops, banks, places of worship,
cafes; the use of leisure facilities; and vocational opportunities in a variety of
off-site work placements.
Transition planning
Developing skills which will support each young adult for life beyond Prior's Court
is the aim of the learning at the Young Adult Provision. In addition to building
core skills such as communication, self-care and daily living skills, by the time
each individual leaves at the age of 25, we will have supported them in
developing the skills they need to access and be part of a local community. We
