My favourite festival-
Chinese New Year
by Cathy Cheung
My favourite festival is Chinese New Year. Every year, I do different
activities with my family.
On Chinese New Year's Eve, we take photos of the festive displays in
shopping centres. We also buy beautiful flowers and put up red paper at
home.
On Chinese New Year Day, I like watching the
lion dance. Two dancers hide under a lion costume.
One dancer holds the head and the other holds
the tail. People play traditional Chinese musical
instruments too. The lion dance brings fortune and
blesses us for the coming year.
On the second day of the festival, we visit our relatives. We usually wear
red clothes. In Chinese culture, the colour red scares away spirits of bad
fortune and brings happiness. We give our relatives
mandarin oranges because they are lucky fruit.
In return, they give me red packets with 'lucky money'
inside. I usually spend it on stationery and food.
At night, we watch the fireworks in Victoria Harbour.
The fireworks make different shapes in the sky.
They are spectacular.
I enjoy this festival very much. Do you like it too?
