Part 1: Read aloud
Speaking skill 1 Reading sentences using appropriate stress
We usually stress keywords in a sentence to tell important information, e.g.
Ben bought a wooden box in the craft market. The box had nice patterns.
A Listen to the recording and pay attention to the stress on the underlined
words. Then repeat after it.
1 I visited my grandparents on Sunday. We enjoyed some delicious dim
sum in their favourite restaurant.
2 My friend Tony told me about his strange dream. He was in a huge
garden and rode on a magical elephant.
B Listen to the recording and underline the stressed words. Then repeat
after it.
1 My brother Mike enjoys swimming. He goes to the swimming pool every
Saturday.
2 Mr Li is our neighbour. He always plays chess with my dad. Mrs Li is
good at cooking. She often shares tasty dishes with us.
3 Wendy got a new tablet for her birthday. She can listen to music and
surf the Internet on it at the same time.
C Underline the stressed words in the following text and read it aloud. Then
listen to the demonstration.
Job Day
On Job Day, my best friend and I role-played different jobs.
Amy was an actress. She practised her part many times and participated in a
play. She thought it was a wonderful experience.
I was a photographer. I had a chance to use professional cameras. I learnt ways to
take good shots from our teacher Mr Wong. I took some nice photos of Amy's play
too.
When you stress two or more keywords,
do not rush and read the words clearly.
