The adage saying that "nothing happens in a vacuum" is old,
yet, time and time again, it is still exciting to experience how all
organisational processes, values, the whole spectrum of human
relationships and important business metrics are all interlinked and
mutually impact each other in an organisation.
As L&D partners we have the privilege to get a view into the development
process of individuals, teams, or larger employee groups, and it is
astounding how many times the solution to a variety of problems or
aspirations lies within the health of the communities we work in.
Workplace community health is like the water in a dock - when it rises, it
lifts all boats, including performance, engagement, innovation and
general wellbeing. Community is "a way of being together with both
individual authenticity and interpersonal harmony so that people
become able to function with a collective energy even greater
than the sum of their individual energies" (M. Scott Peck).
Research says that companies lacking such sense of belonging in a
community see higher turnover rates, increased tension, conflict, power
struggles, absence rates, and low morale, which of course also impacts
the overall business success of a company.
Inclusive communities are built by sharing a common vision that is
mirrored by our objectives and actions, and by building trusting
relationships within and between teams.

Engagement surveys aren't just
about taking a measure of how
engaged our teams are, they're also
an opportunity to take action to
work on the challenges and
frustrations they reveal. The action
plans created have let to a number
of projects and activities across the
business, and the L&D team have
been happy to support where
development is in demand.
