SOUTHAMPTON In December a panther
chameleon that had been missing from his
home for two months finally came out of hiding
when he fell from a tree in Southampton.
RSPCA inspectors rushed the colourful lizard
to a specialist vet so they could give the cold
chameleon fluids and warmth - his body
temperature had to be taken slowly up to the
correct level.
These reptiles live in trees and originate
from Madagascar, so it's amazing that he
managed to survive for so long outside in
the cold.
Luckily his owner came forward and we were
able to reunite them.
Remember that exotic animals are very
difficult to look after, they have specific
needs and require a lot of specialist care
and attention.

LONDON Eragon the Chihuahua was
reunited with his owner for
Christmas after being found inside
a red Santa sack on a church porch
in Hertfordshire.
Three-year-old Eragon was
discovered just before Christmas by
school children attending a service
at St Mary's Church in Hitchin.
The tiny dog had been left tied
up inside the sack along with dog
food, treats, a dog jumper and a
Christmas card which read: "My
lady is going into a home. I need
food cut small. Please find me a
lovely new home. My lady failed.
So sorry."
Eragon's delighted real owner
had lost him while out walking in
August - thank goodness he had a
microchip and the RSPCA was able
to find his real owner.

SUFFOLK A piglet caused a splash when he
went for a swim in the sea and had to be
rescued by the RSPCA in Suffolk.
When the rescue team arrived they worked
out he had scrambled down to Covehithe
beach, but when he was approached he turned
on his trotters and splashed straight out into
the waves!
RSPCA Inspector Jason Finch said: "I have
never seen anything like it. I couldn't believe it
when he darted straight into the sea. He wasn't
concerned at all by the bubbling surf, and was
diving up and down among the waves for ages!"
Inspector Finch scooped the piglet out of
the surf when he could and safely returned
him to his owner. Phew!

WORLDWIDE Please don't use sky
lanterns (also known as Chinese
lanterns) because they can cause all
sorts of dangers to animals.
Pets, farm animals and wildlife have
died slow, painful deaths, because of
sky lanterns. Birds and other animals
can become entangled in the wire or
bamboo frame, like the barn owl in
the photo, which can lead to them
getting injured or even being killed.
Sadly, a foal had to be put to sleep
after his legs were badly injured from
bolting through a fence having been
terrified by a sky lantern.
Some councils have banned sky
lanterns, but we'd like to see all
councils banning them.
