SCIENCE GROUP REVIEW 2014 16
Animals are used for many different purposes
in research and testing and each area of use
raises specific ethical, welfare and scientific
issues. The RSPCA adopts a constructive,
practical approach, aimed at developing more
effective processes of ethical review and fuller
implementation of the 3Rs*.
Our primary aim is the replacement of animal
experiments with humane alternatives. Until this
can be achieved, we work to help ensure that
the minimum numbers of animals are used and
that suffering is reduced or avoided altogether.
*The 3Rs are: replacement of animals with humane
alternatives, reduction of animal use, and
refinement of husbandry and procedures to
reduce suffering and improve welfare
throughout the animals' lives.
