some breathing space. But we will have to make sacrifices.
The Onus Is On You
The individual can affect things by making a start in their own
small way in their local area, but expect a struggle. Moving up
to a wider scenario takes even more determination, effort and
time. As we have seen with Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain
and others, the full force of society, the media and the Law
is brought to bear on them. Those people have to be pretty
strong-willed, principled or dogmatic if you like, in their determination
to resist that. But sometimes in life people have to make
hard decisions and take actions they don't really want to. Any
improbable character could find themselves stepping up to the
plate reluctantly. There are many potential Frodo Baggins' and
Sam Gamgees in the Shire or comedians in Ukraine for example.
We see destruction and reconstruction all the time. But there
are so many lesser levels of waste and inattentiveness to the
environmental consequences of actions that we all take.
What Can Be done
There's a lot that can be done, but simply writing a letter to
the authorities on matters of concern makes very little difference
once the event has been set in train. But it is still better
than nothing. As a private person, you are weak unless you have
managed to hit on some contravention of law or regulations
pointing out somewhere they have slipped up, which an authority
can't help but address.
The effort needs to be made to discover what is in the pipeline
for years ahead and to anticipate what peripheral problems
may occur as a result of whatever is being planned. Success
is more likely in amending future plans if you catch them early
