so long. I hope there is enough time. What could have elevated
him to the heights would have been a determined verbal objection
to HS2 coming hot on the heels of a distinguished career.
Here was his opportunity to object to the destruction of ancient
woodland and disruption of people's homes. It would be the
responsible thing to do. By not being controversial he has done
a huge disservice to the planet. His legacy written in stone in
Westminster Abbey above his tomb? "Opportunities missed."

In his DT column a few years ago he was openly contemptuous
of Defra and the government in general when it came to
wildlife. But being a conservationist he is also a farmer with his
own ideas on the preservation of the country way of life.
There is now conflict with some of the latterly appointed trustees
of his charity. They are trying to sideline him, he asserts.
This has erupted into a public slanging match on the best way
to run the Trust. So we now have another scenario straight from
the Bible, the Tower of Babel. People are in disagreement over
the trivialities. Such a lack of communication, such a hard and
fast exercise of personal egos that the great enterprise fails.
Just another minor thing but they all add up.
