Turner's House
Turner's House in Twickenham offers a unique
insight into the life of Britain's greatest landscape
painter, JMW Turner and is as idiosyncratic and
exceptional as any of Turner's paintings. Designed
by Turner and completed in 1813, the house was
a quiet retreat away from the pressures of the
London art world to which he would invite friends
and indulge in his passion for fishing. Visit Turner's
House and discover the personal side of the great
artist

York House Gardens
York House Gardens are located behind York House
and can be accessed via Twickenham Riverside
(Champion Wharf), Sion Road or York Street. The
biggest remodelling of the gardens came with the
arrival in 1906 of Sir Ratan Tata. He created the
sunken garden immediately behind the House and
erected the walls surrounding it. He completely
remodelled the Riverside Garden, when, in 1910, he
purchased the magnificent group of marble figures,
The Sea Nymphs (known as the Naked Ladies)
which we can see today. The Gardens is also home
to tennis courts, Japanese Garden, Rose Gardens,
Ponds and a magnificent tree collection

Richmond upon Thames has a wealth
of hidden gems. These include:
Alexander Pope's Grotto
Conservation works at Alexander Pope's Grotto
were completed in 2023. The grotto is the last
remaining part of this villa, which he built in 1720
on the banks of the Thames at Twickenham.
Demolished in 1808, the villa was replaced
and the property became the subject of much
redevelopment over the following 200 years. The
grotto is now owned by Radnor House School.
