11. Details of the curriculum and the management and
structure of the arrangements for education.
Prior's Court School aims to provide a broad and balanced range of learning
experiences across the Waking Day Curriculum and to give young people skills
and knowledge that will enable them to lead as full and independent a life as
possible.
Young people have access to the National Curriculum through an adapted
scheme of work. Objectives are taken from the scheme but teaching activities
may be adapted to suit the individual learning styles of young people with
autism. The curriculum also addresses the characteristic additional needs of
young people with autism. Therefore significant emphasis is placed upon
communication, independent life, literacy and numeracy skills, vocational and
learning skills.
Teaching within Prior's Court School is tailored to meet the needs of each
individual young person. Learning takes place in a safe and functional
environment that is consistent and predictable. Teaching is highly structured.
The Waking Day Curriculum ensures continuity between learning that takes place
in class in the daytime and in the residential house in the evening and weekends.
Regular planning days ensure both teachers and residential staff are working
towards the same objectives.
Young people throughout Prior's Court School work through ASDAN accreditation
with a larger emphasis for the Upper School who attend identified learning
streams, based on their strengths, interests and emerging skills.
The curriculum policies, available on our website and from Prior's Court School,
give further details of the curriculum and assessment and review.
The Education and Care departments work closely together and are supported by
the multi-disciplinary teams. There is an experienced leadership team led by the
Director of Education and Lifelong Learning and the Director of Care Services.
Each class is led by a Teacher supported by Autism Practitioners; each home is
led by a Home Manager supported by Senior Autism Practitioners and Autism
Practitioners.
