Palletways enters its 20th year in business in the strongest position
possible, with the network having exceeded all expectations over
the past 12 months. While many bright prospects lie ahead in 2014,
Palletways has much to celebrate from 2013:
Simon Horton is the author of "Negotiation
Mastery: Tools for the 21st Century Negotiator".
He has taught hostage negotiators and some of
the largest companies in the world.
What did you do today? The chances are you were
involved in a negotiation.
Meet any clients? Source those widgets? Recruit
anyone? Talk to IT about upgrading the system?
Ask your staf if they can work late tonight?
Guess what? It's all negotiation. Possibly the core
skill in business.
And yet so many people have the wrong idea
of what makes a good negotiator - they still see it
as a battle. But think about it: energy spent ighting
your colleague is energy wasted; squeezing
your supplier is a great way to get a poor service;
squeezing your customer is a great way to
lose them.
Win-win is the best approach, even for
selish reasons.
Now, I'm not saying be a push-over. But you are
most likely to get your outcome if you also help
the other party get theirs too.
What if your outcomes are mutually exclusive?
My view? I think they very rarely are. There is
always a creative solution to be found. Negotiation
is essentially problem solving, where you work
with the other party to ind a solution that suits
both parties.

Retrospective On 2013
In 2013 Palletways extended its
services to the Czech Republic and
Slovakia, which means the network
now serves 13 European countries.
These are key markets as the
European economy continues to
grow, our customers are targeting
these regions as sources of cheaper
materials and for sales opportunities.
Ofering next day express delivery to
these countries further enhances our
position as the leading pallet network.
Rachael Alpha, Managing Director of
Palletways Europe GmbH, said: "The
addition of the Czech Republic and
Slovakia is part of our wider strategy
to expand our geographical footprint
in Europe and further enhance our
customer ofering."
Palletways UK's Northern Hub
celebrated its irst anniversary in
November and has already proved to
be a valuable addition to our network.
The hub, situated on a six acre site in
Leeds, has a capacity for 4,000 pallets
and parking for 150 trailers, as well
as an on-site vehicle workshop. In
addition to providing a more eicient
service to the North of England and
Scotland, the hub has also had a major
efect on our environmental impact.
Since its launch, the hub has saved
over 1,000,000 road miles by reducing
the trunking distance of our vehicles
and cut over 1,500 tonnes of carbon
dioxide emissions and has handled
over 250,000 pallets.

Customers
Palletways Fulilment built on its
successful irst year by securing a
number of new contract wins,
both in the UK and across Europe.
The team has made real progress
in the food industry, procuring
contracts with two major European
manufacturers; OrganiCulture, an
importer, distributor and retailer of
organic products from Italy, and Fini
Sweets, a confectionery giant.
These two contracts hit the news,
generating 35 items of national and
international news coverage, reaching
an audience of over 370,000 people.

Negotiator
1. Think win-win. The old school approach of
squeezing the other person just doesn't work in
the long run.
2. Project strength. Walmart tend to get better
terms than the corner shop.
3. Have alternatives. The stronger your Plan B,
the better deal you will get.
4. Be ambitious and optimistic. For yourself and
the other party. Working together, great deals can
be struck.
5. Be creative. The best negotiators are the
most creative.
