Adhesives
We recommend that you use our range of environmentally friendly Karndean
Designflooring adhesives that are available for you to order. The type of adhesive
required will depend on the application and location of the installation.
Karndean Mega-Bond Adhesive
Karndean Mega-Bond is a non-solvent and low odour
adhesive suitable for indoor use. Mega-Bond is used for all
Karndean LVT glue backed installations. Apply Mega-Bond
using a V1 1.6mm x 1.6mm notched trowel and install into a
wet film (do not let the adhesive tack-up). Refer to AS/NZS
1884 for best practice subfloor preparation.
Karndean Hi-Tack PS
Karndean Hi-Tack PS is a pressure sensitive 'peel and
release' adhesive used for installing LooseLay tiles and
planks. Use a roller or notched trowel to apply Hi-Tack PS
evenly over the subfloor allowing it to dry into a
'clear film' before installation.
Karndean 8000 2-Part Waterproof /
High Temperature Adhesive
Karndean's 2-Part Polyurethane is a waterproof, high
temperature adhesive for use in circumstances when
excessive water puddling or high temperatures are expected.
It can also be used for adhesion to non-porous substrates
such as steel. When mixing parts 'A' & 'B" together an
extreme permanent chemical bond is achieved.
A great benefit of all Karndean adhesives is that each formulation prevents spillages
from seeping into tile/plank joints. In the case of Mega-Bond and Hi-Tack PS, a
polymer sealer is incorporated.

proof membrane must be incorporated, dampness tests must be
made and newly laid concrete floors must be allowed to dry out, all to
AS 1884-2012 (or for New Zealand NZS 1884-2013) or AS/NZS 2455.22007 as appropiate.
• TIMBER: These must be firm, smooth and even. All timber floors
including particleboard, should be completely covered with flooring
grade hardboard to AS 1884-2012 (or for New Zealand NZS 1884-2013)
or AS/NZS 2455.2-2007 as appropiate.
• PLYWOOD: Suitable for use providing it complies with AS/NZS 2269
and be a minimum of 6mm thickness. Test first for dampness before
proceeding. Lightly sand joints and filled areas. Vacuum to remove
dust to facilitate bonding.
TRADITIONAL CARPET TILES
This general guide is provided in good faith when Karndean HI-TACK
PS adhesive is used for non Karndean branded carpet tiles. It is your
own responsibility to ensure that the correct installation guide for the
branded carpet tiles being installed is strictly followed in case of any
differences. These instructions are generally found in each box or by
application to the appropriate brand supplier.
ACCLIMATISATION - IMPORTANT
• Stack the tiles outside the boxes, but laid flat, at room temperature
24 hours prior to installation. Installation should take place in a
temperature of at least 18°C.
PLANNING
• The position of the first tile always determines the end result. Firstly
find your starting point. You can find the centre of a room by running
a line from corner to corner, both ways. Once you have found the
centre of the room, you need to lay your tiles from that point towards
the wall in each direction, cutting tiles to fit the 'fills' when you get to
the walls (see below).
• Check that the dye-lot numbers are all the same and not mixed.
INSTALLING THE CARPET TILES
• Dry-lay the tiles on the floor to finalize the pattern and position before
gluing them down. HI-TACK PS is a pressure sensitive adhesive; this
means that whilst the tiles have lateral stability, you will still be able
to easily take up and replace tiles, because a PS adhesive forms a dry
film when exposed to air, but reactivates when the tile is replaced and
pressure applied.
• There are usually arrows on the back of the tiles to make sure the
pattern or 'nap' of the carpet pile is laid in the same direction or
alternately laid at 90 degree angles to each other to provide a
chquerboard effect called 'tessellated'.
• From your starting point trowel the PS adhesive from the bucket,
then using a brush or roller or notched spreader, apply the adhesive
evenly over the whole surface and allow to dry to a clear film. Never
install onto wet PS adhesive. NB: Some brands of carpet tiles offer an
alternate 'grid adhesive system' instead of full spread; to find out refer
to that brand's own installation guide. .
• Position the first row of tiles, butting them together closely and cut
accurately at perimeters.
CUTTING THE TILES IN AT THE WALL
• For each fill, turn a carpet tile upside down to mark a cutting line to fill
in the gap between the already installed tile and the wall. Make sure
the arrow is pointed in the opposite direction of the existing tiles when
it is turned over. Mark the cut line with a marker pen, then using a
straightedge tool for guidance cut the tile from the back with a curved
lino knife. Turn the cut piece of tile back right side up and set into
position to fill the gap.
KARNDEAN LooseLay LVT RANGES
(When some adhesive bonding is required)
• IMPORTANT: Refer to separate and more detailed Karndean LooseLay
LVT Ranges installation instructions available from Karndean or found
in every box. Solvents will damage the stability of the tiles/planks
and MUST BE THOROUGHLY REMOVED if used to clean the subfloor,
otherwise it will void the product warranty.
• ACCLIMATISATION OF MATERIAL: Remove from packaging into stacks (but
rested flat) 48 hours prior and during installation to condition to the room
temperature where used, which must be kept between 18°C - 29°C.
• GLUE FREE METHOD: Most residential and light commercial
applications can be installed glue free without using this adhesive.
Consult the Karndean LooseLay installation leaflet found in every box
for more information and set-out procedure.
• GRID STICK METHOD: for large high trafic and most commercial
areas, use around the perimeter and in a grid using 10cm wide bands
every 3m in both directions.
• PEEL UP METHOD: for extreme commercial trafic areas such as
entrances, wheeled trafic, high footfall and high temperature areas,
use 100% full spread.
• APPLICATION: Use a brush or roller or notched spreader to apply the
pressure sensitive (PS) adhesive evenly over the areas required and
allow drying to a clear film before Laying-in. NEVER install into wet PS
adhesive. Install tiles/ planks entirely at random; tightly butt-join and
press firmly into place.
• DOMESTIC WET AREAS: Example kitchens, bathrooms and potential
high spillage areas etc. can be installed using this adhesive as an option
to glue free because Hi-Tack PS incorporates a polymer acrylic sealer
that helps to prevent seepage between tile/plank joints; but most
domestic wet areas can be successfully installed glue free. However
for areas that are prone to frequent puddling, then Karndean 8000
2-part polyurethane adhesive should be used. This type of adhesive
provides a permanent bond.
ADHESIVE APPLICATION
• BEFORE AND AFTER: Stir well and keep container closed and store well
sealed.
• DRY-OFF PERIOD: Adhesive should have dried clear before carpet
tiles or vinyl planks are placed upon it. Never lay into wet adhesive.
• COVERAGE: Approximately 8-9 square metres per litre depending on
conditions of substrate.
• CLEAN-UP: (1) Traditional Carpet tiles; water whilst wet, but mineral
turps if adhesive is dry. (2) Karndean LooseLay LVT Ranges; water
whilst wet, but Karndean Remove if adhesive is dry on the floor.
• PEEL-UP SYSTEM: When cured the adhesive forms a pressure sensitive
(PS) film enabling traditional carpet tiles and Karndean LooseLay
LVT Ranges to be held laterally in position. The PS system then
allows the flooring components to be cleanly lifted for cleaning and
repositioning and/or new replacement because the film becomes
dry when exposed to air. When pressed back into place (pressure
applied) the dry film reactivates.

FIELD OF APPLICATION
Karndean HT Adhesive is a specially developed
dispersion adhesive for wet bonding of PVC
sheet and tile floorcoverings, to concrete,
plywood and smoothing compounds.
Karndean HT Adhesive is suitable for use
with underfloor heating systems, provided
the maximum service temperature is not
exceeded. The heating should be switched
of at least 48 hours before, during and after
installation of the floorcovering.
PREPARATION OF SUBFLOORS
Site conditions must comply with relevant
British Standards. Subfloors should be
even, free from cracks, and free from any
contaminants including surface hardeners
and additives that may hinder adhesion.
It should also have an efective damp
proof membrane and be permanently dry.
The only British Standard approved test
for dryness is by properly calibrated and
insulated hygrometer giving a reading of less
than 75%RH.
Very absorbent, uneven concrete or sand
/cement floors should be primed, then
screeded with smoothing compound to a
depth of 3mm and allowed to dry overnight. It
is recommended that all chipboard subfloors
are overlaid with flooring
grade plywood (minimum 6mm) prior to
application of adhesive.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Wet Bonding. For absorbent or porous
subfloors and floorcoverings the wet bonding
method is essential.
Karndean HT Adhesive should be spread evenly
over the floor surface with an A2 trowel. The
adhesive should be spread with a sweeping
motion at 60
o
angle and the floorcovering
placed immediately. You are advised to work
section by section to avoid leaving the adhesive
too long before laying in the floorcovering.
Product must be wet bonded.
INSTALLATION
Should be installed in accordance with BS8203:
2001 (Installation of resilient floorcoverings).
Material should be acclimatised at 18-26oC
for 24 hours prior to laying and maintained
at 18-26oC during and for 24 hours after
installation. Subfloors should be smooth,
hard and dry before laying. Uneven, solid
or suspended timber subfloors may need
preparation to meet the required standard.
A DPM must be incorporated in direct to
earth concrete subfloors. Karndean must
be laid with the appropriate adhesive. For
areas subject to excessive heat Karndean HT
is recommended.
For areas subject to moisture Karndean
Epoxy is recommended.
FINISHING
It is essential to ensure good overall contact
between the floorcovering and adhesive, we
recommend that the floorcovering be rolled
with a 68kg roller or a small hand roller.
Avoid point loads or wet cleaning for 24
hours following installation. Safety data sheet
available for professional user on request.
Flammability: Non-flammable.
Cleaning of Tools: Clean immediately after
use with water, or white spirit if the material
has dried.
Cleaning of Surfaces: Any Karndean Adhesive
on the surface of the floorcovering should be
removed immediately with a damp cloth.
DO NOT ALLOW TO DRY.
STORAGE: 12 months under good storage
conditions in original, unopened containers.
Keep out of direct sunlight at a temperature
of between 5
oC and 30
oC.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Keep out of the reach of children. Wear
suitable protective clothing, gloves
and eye/face protection.
