No remuneration was paid to the Chairman of the Council or other Council members in their role as trustees. Costs and reasonable
expenses incurred by Council members on behalf of the Society - such as travel, subsistence, telephone, postage and incidentals -
are reimbursed. These costs are included in note 3f. Two members of Council out of 24 did not make claims for reimbursement in 2014
(2013, 1). In 2014, Council members were reimbursed £100k (2013, £86k) for out-of-pocket expenses and the Society paid £63k (2013, £56k)
on their behalf for expenditure incurred while performing their duties as trustees. Under Section 185 of the Charities Act 2011, one
Council member, David Canavan, received payments totalling £18k (2013, £39k) and was reimbursed £28k (2013, £13k) for expenses
incurred. These payments relate to services provided by Mr Canavan in coordinating and leading negotiations in the development of
key corporate and commercial partnerships. This work is crucial to augment our trading income streams and deliver animal welfare
messages to a wider audience. The fees charged for these services are significantly below market rates.
The emoluments of higher paid staff within the following scales were: 2014 2013

Emoluments include salary, benefits in kind and exit costs, but exclude pension scheme contributions. All employees earning more
than £60,000 in 2014 participated in the pension scheme. (2013, 15). Of the higher paid staff disclosed in the table above, three left the
Society during the year (2013, one).
Employer contributions of £192k were paid into the pension scheme on behalf of these employees in 2014.
