OA Round-up
I have retired from a career
in the diplomatic service
and in management of
charitable groups. I live in
Tucson, Arizona with my
wife Shirley and work as a
volunteer caring for babies
in a crisis shelter for abused
and neglected children.
I retired from my job in Switzerland
in 1986. My wife and I sailed our
boat to Cyprus where we had
already bought a house in the
Paphos district. Two of our children
remained in Switzerland and we
now have five grandchildren

is enjoyable here, plenty to do, lots of friends, fine weather
- if a bit warm in summer. I would be happy to hear from
any OAs who might be visiting.

My wife and I have been on our eighth sea cruise, this time
sailing from Southampton through the Med to the Black
Sea and back. We have lived in Jersey since 1979. Our two
married daughters both had twins - a pair of boys and a
pair of girls who keep us young and active. I have briefly
visited King's and find it more like a university campus, a
far cry from the spartan days of 1951-1955, followed by
National Service as a 2nd Lieut with 4RHA and seven years
as a Captain in the TA gunners.

Following Edinburgh University and then PG studies I
went to Germany with Guinness, returning home 4 years
later to teach business and languages. After a further
degree in France, I retired in 2002 as Deputy Director
of Buckinghamshire New University. his year, my wife
Barbara and I celebrated 40 years of marriage and have
2 sons, 2 grandchildren and live in Buckinghamshire.
Retirement has brought time for sailing in the Atlantic and
Europe and an active interest in Triathlon. My brother,
Duncan Paton, is married with 3 sons and 5 grandchildren,
and lives in Knysna (SA).

I was a cast member in the well-received documentary
film Traces of the Trade about my slave-trading ancestors
and racial issues today. We enjoy driving across the USA
each year for extended visits with our 6 (soon to be 7)
small grandchildren.

A scholarship to an American University was followed by
four years at Cambridge; teaching in the maintained and
independent sectors, with 14 years at Bryanston before
becoming Head at Wycliffe College, and then miraculously
at Christ's Hospital. "Retirement" has included founding
a school in hailand, running the Bishop of London's
educational charities, being Development Director of
Round Square, being Master of the Worshipful Company
of Ironmongers and now enjoying educational consultancy,
occasionally overseas. One wife, three children, eight
grandchildren; three books; and, alas, only one OA friend,
who like me was a founder member of Carpenter House.
