On Tuesday 11 November King's College
held an exclusive evening with Jos Buttler,
Marcus Trescothick and Roger Knight OBE
in the JP Morgan Media Centre at Lord's.
he evening started with a welcome speech
from Roger Knight, Chairman of Governors,
who gave an insight into the challenges
of building the Media Centre during his
tenure as Secretary and Chief Executive of
the MCC. As the world's only single-shell
aluminium building, this futuristic pod was
an extraordinary feat of engineering, achieved through the
precision of shipbuilders amid spiralling costs and challenges.
It opened to international acclaim and won the prestigious
Stirling Prize for architecture in 1999.
Guests were able to explore the building, normally a preserve
of journalists and commentators on match days, with a unique
view of the ground. Lord's served a wonderful dinner and Guy
Lavender, CEO of Somerset County Cricket Club, and a King's
parent, conducted a Q&A session with both Jos and Marcus,
giving the opportunity for guests to ask any
questions. he subjects discussed included
Somerset's performance, England's future
success and personal questions for both
players about their performances and
future careers. his session was entertaining,
with lots of cricket banter, and provided
unique perspectives from a rising star and a
respected established player.
he evening ended with an auction of
unique items in support of the King's
Community Sports Hub Appeal, kindly led by Lord Jeffrey
Archer. Jos Buttler donated his debut test shirt, signed by the
England team, and an ICC Champions Trophy shirt with a
personalised message, and these items raised £2,100. In total,
the auction raised a fantastic £9,000. Our thanks go out to
parents, OAs and Friends of King's who donated the auction
items, and to the guests who supported the Appeal.
