Cronk Cunis Rugby Tournament 2014
After losing to the Royal Hospital School and Berkhamstead
School in miserable conditions the final match against
Wallington was extremely competitive. After going 15 down
in the first half the momentum swung in King's favour. his
allowed Archie Watts to pull off an outrageous wrong footed
up and under to allow Lloyd Griffiths to score a try. he last
play saw Jack Holmes set up Olly Gibb for a try and conversion
bringing the final score to 14 - 15.
King's College 1st XV v Blaine Tottle OA XV
On a lovely warm afternoon it was a pleasure to
invite back a strong OA XV led by Blaine Tottle with
a full complement of players who had previous 1st
XV experience including Alex Dunham and Will
Potter, who toured Zimbabwe with the national
U18 Independent School's squad earlier in the year.
he OA's played in a Barbarians style and it was a
joy to see them move the ball quickly as they began
to exert greater pressure at the end of the first half. With the 1st XV defending hard in their own 22m, Conor Bannister
smashed over the line. King's came back strongly and the OAs gave away a penalty in front of the posts. Will Knill slotted
the penalty coolly and the game was evenly poised at 5-3 to the OAs.
he second half was a thrilling affair. Will Potter scored a devastating long range try, as he had done so often in the red and
black of the school, leaving defenders grasping at thin air. Converting his own try the OAs looked strong but gradually King's
came back. Another Knill penalty brought it to 12-6 until Jamie Wild scored in the corner putting the OAs further ahead.
his score sparked the 1st XV into life as their forwards took control. Smith crashed over from short range, Knill converted
and it was 17-13. Still King's pressed hard: James Turpin showed his considerable strength to power over the OA line and
with another Knill conversion King's took the lead 20-17. It took a moment of brilliance from the King's back line to make
the game secure as Counsell scored a super try in the corner to put the 1st XV out of reach.
