he school, and our choir/musicians
generally, were extraordinarily busy
last term. Many were involved in
the outstanding production of
Guys and Dolls, some made their
way to London to sing at the King's
Christmas lunch and that same
afternoon went to Exeter to record
a Christmas carol for the BBC.
2013 has seen many new initiatives
and success and I can only mention
a few highlights.
King's has broken new ground in the UK by being the first
school to introduce the Philosothon - a competition in
which pupils discuss philosophical ideas and are scored
for the effectiveness of their contribution to the overall
debate. I am also delighted to announce that from
September 2014 we will be offering a full GCSE in Religious
Studies as one of the choices that pupils can make going
into the fourth form.
We fielded nine girls' hockey teams and played 81
matches during the Michaelmas term, a new record. In
rugby we played 110 matches, winning half of them, a
terrific achievement given the strength and size of some
of the schools we play.
Both our U18 and our U15 girls' seven-a-side football
teams won their respective ISFA National Championships.
Congratulations to Conor Bannister for winning gold at
the Full Contact Junior Men's Kickboxing Championships
in Tuscany over half term.
he King's College Marines won the prestigious Sir Steuart
Pringle Trophy at Lympstone for the fourth time in five
years in October. his was an outstanding achievement
and congratulations are due to the boys themselves and
to Pete Belfield OA and Steve King, who trained them to
a very high standard.
Paddy Cartwright, School Captain, was presented with
his Lord Lieutenant's Cadet Award at the Bishop's Palace
in Wells by Lady Gass in November. He continues a
sequence of seven years of KCT having at least one Lord
Lieutenant's Cadet.
I am delighted with the progress of our new amphitheatre
funded by a generous donation from an OA. his should
be finished late January and will be an excellent and
versatile addition to our drama facilities.
he new tennis and netball courts are now completed,
apart from a coat of paint, and are already being used for
netball practice. We also have
new cricket nets in place.
2014 promises to be just as
exciting and I do hope you
will find time to visit us.
