Melissa McFarlane - Carpenter 2013
Using the Old Aluredian
network, I was able to organise
work experience with Clarke
Willmott Solicitors in Bristol. I
became part of the Deputyship
department that works with the
Court of Protection, for clients
who cannot manage their own
affairs. During the week I was
given the opportunity to help
arrange affairs: such as bank
statements, wills and medical records. his experience has
confirmed my aspiration to pursue a career in law.

of 39 in the 70-74 Age Group.
I have now completed over 50
triathlons and have represented
Team GB in 5 European

Champs, including this one.
James Haigh - Neate's 2002
James Haigh competed at the
Age Group World Triathlon
Championships in London,
on Sunday 15 September. his
was his second time at the Age
Group World Championships,
following the competition in
New Zealand last year. He came
59th out of 119 competitors in
his age group and his times are
as follows:
Swim - 10:45 / Bike - 1:03:15
Run - 37:19 - Total - 1:57:34 (transition was huge - 1200
competitors)
he swim was in the Serpentine, but was unfortunately cut
short due to the air temperature being too cold. herefore,
the 750-metre swim played in the favour of those who
were stronger on the bike and running disciplines. Haigh
was feeling good going into the race, as his preparation had
been as planned. he bike course was flat but convoluted.
It consisted of two loops around central London, starting
and finishing in Hyde Park, where transition was located on
the banks of the lake. Haigh said: 'he bike course was very
scenic and it made the event even more special to be able to
cycle past iconic structures such as Buckingham Palace and be on a similar route as the elite athletes in the Olympics; I
experienced a huge feeling of pride and nostalgia, as I was
fortunate enough to be in Hyde Park for the men's Olympic
Triathlon race, last year.' his year's event's run route enabled
all the supporters to get behind you, as you went around the
park three times. I very much appreciated my supporters'
screams from the crowd and this certainly kept me going!
James Kennedy - Woodard 1959
James Kennedy moderated in
Modern History and Political
Science at Trinity College,
Dublin, in 1963. His songwriter
father advised him against the
music business so he pursued
a career in the almost equally
insecure fields of journalism
and public relations. Now semiretired,
he lives near Céret in
southern France.
Laura Bates - Meynell 2004
Laura Bates gave a lecture at
King's College about her online
campaign known as 'he
Everyday Sexism Project'. She
spoke powerfully about how
sexual abuse occurs in more
places and ways than people
sometimes think, despite the
fact that we may feel we have
achieved gender equality.
Her website gives people
the chance to share their
experiences of sexual discrimination, prejudice and abuse,
in the hope that it will raise awareness of the full extent of
the problem.
Her lecture covered aspects such as the 'Freshers' Week'
party culture, and how online jokes and trolls can get out of
hand. Questions from the audience included "How many
of your contributors are male?" and "What do you think of
Miley Cyrus?"
Laura is a passionate, determined and articulate speaker;
her talk was inspiring to many, and opinion-changing to
others. She frequently appears on national TV and radio
despite facing a torrent of abuse for standing up for herself,
and risks her own safety for the cause. Laura writes for he
Independent and reported recently that her website now
has 50,000 entries and that her campaign is flourishing in 18
countries.
In the wake of Laura's visit, King's College now officially
supports the 'No More Page hree' campaign, a cause which
is closely associated with Laura's work.
