George KENT b 1896 Shaftesbury, his father was a
solicitor. Served with the Wiltshire Regt in WW1
(Captain). Prisoner of war in 1918. Awarded the Belgian
Croix de Guerre in 1918. Worked in India from 1922.
Died 1952 in Frome.
John HACKNEY b 1896 in Burma. Served with 18th Btn
Welsh Regt and the Royal Sussex Regt (Lieutenant) in
France. Prisoner of war April to September 1918. Died
1988 in Lewes.
William EDWARDS b 1896 Bridport. Died 1980 in
Bridport.
William DREW b 1897 Brixham. Enlisted 1916. Died
1980 in Torbay.
Walter Fitzgerald BOND b 1896 Keyham, Plymouth.
His father was the vicar of Ashburton. Enlisted 1916
Worcestershire Regt, served in Palestine. Stockbroker
then actor in 64 films and TV productions (as Walter
FITZGERALD) including he Cruel Sea, he Camp on
Blood Island, Z Cars and Dr Who, and numerous stage
productions. Died in London 1976. His elder brother
Basil was also at King's. See separate article about Walter
Fitzgerald in this edition.
Hugh Phillpotts b Exmouth, W.A. 1895. Enlisted 1914.
Served with 18th Infantry Australian I.F. Killed at
Gallipoli 22 August 1915. His name is remembered on
the memorial plaque in the Chapel cloister along with
the 83 other OAs who died in the First World War, and
at Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.
Percy LATHAM. Captain of cricket and football 1913.
Served with the Hampshire Regt (2nd Lt). Killed in
action in the Dardenelles 20 August 1915. His name is
remembered on the memorial plaque in the Chapel
cloister and at the Helles Memorial Gallipoli,
James WILCOCKS b 1897 Richmond Canada. Served in
the Devonshire Regt. Died 1970 in Exeter.
Frank WATTON b 1895 Cardiff, his father was a
schoolmaster. Enlisted 1916, served in France with the
Royal Sussex Regt (Lieutenant). Opened King Alfred's, a
prep school, in Westbourne Road, Penarth in 1922. Died
1955 in Cuckfield, Sussex.
Colin BUTLER b 1896 Barton Regis, Gloucs. Served in
Royal Army Service Corps (A/Capt); wounded 1917.
Died 1957 in Taunton.
homas KEAT b 1897 Willesden, orphaned 1900 and
lived with relatives in Cornwall. Served with the Duke of
Cornwall Light Infantry. Died 1948 in Bude.
Walter UPHILL (linesman) b 1893 Leytonstone. Father
was a hosiery manufacturer. Served in France from 1916
with the YMCA Corps. India 1918 -1922 as a bank clerk.
Died 1978 in Croydon.
If you have visited the Archives since June 2012 you could not help but notice the giant photo of the 1911/12 football team
that graces the entrance. Over time we feel we have got to know them rather well, but, like us, you may have wondered
what became of the members of this team once they had left King's. With a little research and some scouring of the
Aluredians of that time we have come up with some interesting information. If anyone can add any further details we
would love to hear from you.
