hirty county cricketers start winter training
Some people might think, with a cold winter already upon us, that
cricket of all sports would be a distant thought for most. However,
for the cricketers at King's College and at King's Hall School, this is
certainly not the case.
he two schools boast 30 county players between them of all age
groups, from Under 10s through to Under 17s, and they have already
begun their winter training programme. Strength and conditioning,
skills, tactics and the technical elements of the game are all covered,
and this year they have been able to work with Ben Phillips
(Nottinghamshire CCC and Somerset CCC) who has joined King's as
their strength and conditioning and bowling coach.
Director of Cricket Phil Lewis said "We are really lucky to have someone of Ben's expertise on board to add to our
excellent group of coaches here. We pride ourselves on developing talent from a young age and this can be seen with
the wealth of talent we have across all age groups. Six of our county cricketers (Harry homas, Harry Parkin, Charles
Parkin, Tom Pittman, Ed Coombs and Calvin Harrison) had never played at county level before joining us, and we're
keen not to just rely on top cricketers coming to us. Regardless of previous playing standard we hope to improve
our players wherever they might end up! We are already building towards what will hopefully be another excellent
summer, and look forward to seeing all of our teams in action again once it's a bit warmer."
Royal Marines win Sir Steuart Pringle trophy
he King's College Royal Marines section has won the
highly prestigious Sir Steuart Pringle trophy yet again. his
is the fourth time in five years they have won this highly
prestigious competition - last year they came second by just
one point.
he competition is held each year at the Royal Marines
Commando Training Centre in Lympstone, Devon, and
aims to bring together all the Royal Marine Detachments
in the country from 19 prestigious schools, which include
Charterhouse, Harrow, Rugby, Winchester College,
Pangbourne and Canford. he teams are treated as if they are in their 28th week of recruit training, and are assessed
across 12 assessed stances. hese include Battle Exercises, Section Attacks, Battle First Aid, Endurance, Drill and more.
he King's team won three of these individual stance trophies: the Drill, First Aid and Bottom Field Endurance, and our
overall points score was enough to secure victory and get the highly coveted trophy back in our hands.
Special thanks must go to Major Pete Belfield OA, and Lt Steve King, who gave up many hours of their own free time in
preparation for the competition. he victorious 2013 King's College Sir Steuart Pringle team consisted of Josh Stickland
(Section Commander), Ralph Lawson, Henry Willis, Ed Gibb, Henry Dufosee, Tom Frankham, Matt Duncan, Ed Keeling
and Dan Mead.
Hockey honours
Eleven of our hockey players have been selected
from their Junior Academy Centres to attend the
England Hockey Junior Regional Performance
Centres. All the players, having attended and
worked hard at the training sessions, were then
chosen to play in the Tier 1 competitions in
their respective age groups against other Junior
Regional Performance Centres.
Alia Hamaoui was also selected to represent the
Wessex Leopards in the England Hockey Futures
Cup, where she will play against other aspiring players from the Saxon Tigers, Mercia Lynx and Pennine Pumas, all
hoping to be selected for an England Under 18 trial. As a goalkeeper, Alia will be hoping to follow in the footsteps
of OA Maddie Hinch, who is currently keeping goal for the England women and who was recently voted TriFinance
EuroHockey Championships goalkeeper of the tournament.
