Between June 2016 and January 2017 the
Ward Sisters and Charges Nurses moving
to the Generic Ward Block, along with their
deputies, were involved in a piece of work to
prepare for their transfer to the new build.
The aim was not only to prepare and support
their teams for the physical move to the new
site, but also to plan how safe, effective and
person centred care would be delivered in
100% single room accommodation.
The group were facilitated by Christine
Boomer, Research Fellow, Nursing and
Workforce Development and Elinor Welch,
Lead for Person Centred Care, to have time
out to engage with each other, the facilitators
and other Trust staff involved in the move,
and to have thinking and planning time.
An early visit to the new building and
individual wards allowed staff to visualise
their future working environments.
The programme that followed consisted of a number of practical sessions engaging with colleagues
and stakeholders, involved both in the actual move and in care thereafter.
Visits from Capital Development and commissioning staff alongside Pharmacy, Catering, Security
and Infection Control allowed the teams to discuss operational issues and plan ward working patterns
and processes.
Alongside these sessions the staff were facilitated in 'learning sets' where issues such as open
visiting and staff allocation in the new environment were debated and discussed.
