Venetia Maitland - Carpenter 2006
I have just finished a tour
of Toronto and the UK,
with the show he Two
Worlds of Charlie F. I play
the role of Jean Barker
as well as various other
roles. it went down a
storm - standing ovations
every night and four and
five stars from everyone
from the Guardian to the
Times.
Its a really unusual
production which began as a series of drama workshops
and interviews with wounded servicemen in order to give
them their 'voice' back. he play was written by Owen
Sheers based on their stories and experiences of the forces/
war and returning home - not always as the same person
- and was directed by Stephen Rayne. It was supposed to
be a one off gala night which was supported by Sir Trevor
Nunn, Ray Winstone and other well known public figures. However after much interest and wining the Amnesty
Freedom of EXPRESSION prize it is now touring the UK.
Half the cast are actors and the other half are the wounded
soldiers themselves and the response we've had so far has
been incredible. It is like no other theatre project I've ever
been part of. It has been 'life is art' for me as my boyfriend
has been in Afghanistan with the army through the process
and returned last week.
Here is a link to the website which tells the story a lot better
than I probably have and also has a few videos which cover
the process and the gala night: http://www.charlie-f.com/
We sadly don't come too close to Taunton but if anyone is
up for the journey I think (I hope!) you will think it worth it.
