Dear OAs
We hope that the November Dinner will see the launch of a
book remembering those OAs who died in the First World
War written by Chris Warren OA.
he dinner will also give OAs a chance to say farewell to Mark
Irons who was the inspiration for many a rugby player and for
many other sportsmen at Pyrland Hall and more recently for
sportswomen as well at King's Hall. Our other guests are Chris
and Charlotte Holmes and the evening will be an opportunity
to celebrate Chris' many contributions to music at King's, not
to mention his rugby refereeing and
cricket coaching.
We do hope that you will be able to join is on this occasion. For
further details see back cover.
Dear OAs
Over the next four years while we are commemorating the
First World War, each edition of the OA Club News will
include a tale from the war, remembering particularly some of
those who survived. On this occasion it remembers a pair of
identical twins, the Rippon brothers, who made their mark on
King's cricket as well as both going on to play for Somerset in
1914 before they volunteered to fight in the war.
As you will see King's cricket continues to go from strength
to strength. Many congratulations to Neil Brand, 2014 season
1st Team Captain, who has pulled off the incredible feat of
scoring more than 1000 runs in a season. It was good to see
Jos Buttler described as being 'educated at the town's acclaimed King's College' in the Daily
Telegraph when he came back to Taunton to play for Lancashire.
Another great achievement was the success of the Girls' Football team in winning the
Independent Schools Cup. heir coach Chris Heayns was telling me recently just how much
interest this has created and how one of the benefits of the new Sports Hub will be to help
the development of Futsal, described by Henry Winter of the Telegraph as 'a significant part
of England's future'.
he front cover features Laura Bates OA who gave away the prizes at King's Hall and spoke
very eloquently. I was pleased to see the historian Lucy Worsley
praise her website Everyday Sexism with the words 'all hail …to
its founder Laura Bates'.

Laura Bates started her project called 'everyday sexism' to
raise awareness of previously untold stories. Astounded by
the response that came pouring in from all over the world,
she quickly realised that the situation was far worse than
she had initially thought. Laura decided it was time for
women to lead a real change. Everyday sexism is a protest
against inequality that provides a unique window into the
vibrant movement sparked by this juggernaut of stories -
often shocking, sometimes amusing and always poignant.
his book is a manifesto for change; a ground breaking,
anecdotal examination of sexism in modern day society.
