OA 3 - 0 King's 1st Team
by Jo Watts
he game was evenly contested
throughout and the score line does not
reflect how the game panned out. In a
very open match (and a much cleaner
one than last year) the OA team took
the lead through Dave McNeill mid-way
through the first half and scored twice
more in quick succession through a
scrappy George Wayman effort and a long
range volley from Dan Short. he second
half was mainly played in both penalty
areas and was end-to-end as legs became
tired. Unfortunately, King's could not take
advantage of their many chances in front of goal as they
committed players forward in an attempt to make a spirited
comeback and the game ended 3-0 to the OA team. A huge thanks must go to Chris Heayns for organising the event
and all the OAs who attended…and to the King's players for
agreeing to play on a Sunday!
Rugby Rocks Tournament
by Will McKegney
Despite some late withdrawals from a few
potentially key players, the OA's are never
a bunch to let any misfortune dampen
their spirits and we were grateful for a few
external recruits. Playing in a similar tier to
the previous 2 years we found ourselves in
one of 8 pools, with 3 teams competing
in each. We managed to win both of our
group games comfortably, amassing in
excess of 80 points whilst only conceding
one score in response.
Luke Osborne and Paddy Boyle were as
destructive as ever, both playing for the
third straight year, and the deputising
Henry Cunningham looked as stylish as he
did in his schoolboy days. Moving through to the knockout
stages we were drawn against a competitive Battersea
Ironsides team in our round of 16 but managed to step up
to this higher level with aplomb, Will Mckegney scoring 2
tries in our 26-7 victory.
Our quarter-final fixture was against another fellow 'old
boys' side in the form of Merchant Taylor's, Northwood a
very physical side who deserve credit for forcing us to play
to their strengths. We found ourselves 14-0 down pretty
quickly. Never one to back down from a challenge at school, Quinton Taylor began to assert himself on the game with
some big hits and we scored a try of our own to make it 14-7
just before half time. he second half was a hugely physical
affair and sadly the only side to score were the OMT's outfit,
who controversially ended the game with 8 players on the
pitch, denying us at least one score and leaving a sour taste
in the mouth at the final whistle. Final score 21-7.
Despite an earlier exit than hoped it was another thoroughly
enjoyable day and my huge thanks go, once again, to Mark
Langford for organising everything. Bring on 2015!
