Shortlisted for the Chairman's recognition award.
The Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Team is
an excellent example of a dynamic, evolving service
at a time when transformation is urgently required
due to challenges with waiting times and workforce
issues.
The team consists of three CNSs who are
knowledgeable, passionate and dedicated.
Waiting times for Urology, especially routine
consultant appointments have been steadily
increasing over the last number of years.
Recognising that this was due to demands
exceeding capacity, the team redesigned their
service and developed a comprehensive service.
Elements of the service redesign include new and innovative nurse-led clinics (both face-to-face and
telephone) utilising skill mix, alongside ensuring high quality and a person-centred approach as a
central tenant.
The last number of years has also seen the evolution of nurse-led diagnostic services such as
flexible cystoscopy plus a Urodynamic Service. This is unique as the team delivers the only nurse-led
Flexible Cystoscopy Service in Northern Ireland.
The breadth of services delivered by the Urology CNSs include diagnostics, support, information,
treatments and follow-up, embracing wider holistic health and wellbeing components of care.
