I
have the best of all worlds
as I actually live and work
in Mayenne, Pays de la Loire
but right on the border with
Orne, Normandy and Illeet-Vilaine,
Brittany - how's that
for diversity? This is a beautiful
area with rolling countryside,
traditional villages and a most
welcoming community. I have
deep roots in the area and feel
blessed to be able to pass on my
knowledge and experience.
If the secret of buying
property is "location, location,
location," then this is the region
for you. We have excellent access
to Paris, as well as the rest of
northern Europe and the UK.
Getting to a selection of airports
or ferry ports is a breeze. Our
climate is ideal, with plenty of
sunshine but not the temperature
extremes found in Spain and Italy.
Most of the Mayenne is only an
hour from the coast, and two
hours to Cherbourg and Caen.
One of my favourite places
is the vibrant town of Laval. It is
packed with excellent restaurants
and has a pretty château that
dominates the old town. You will
fi nd that there are regular direct
trains to Paris and Charles de
Gaulle airport. This is a town
with a signifi cant architectural
heritage, packed with mediaeval
houses, city walls and ancient
bridges - if you get the time, I
would highly recommend sitting
in one of the many cafés and just
people-watching.
I am surrounded by a host of
small villages and market towns,
ripe for exploring. There are miles
of public footpaths that lead you
past ancient mills, druid stones
and riverside paths. Speaking of
markets, I do like shopping at
the small farmers' market, held in
Gorron every Wednesday. It's not
the biggest or most colourful in
the area, but the beautiful river
Colmont runs through the town
centre, and Gorron is my "go-to"
town for sports and community
events.
Of course, the town of
Mayenne is a hub for the region
and has an impressive range of
bars, restaurants and things to do.
It's also the place where I would
pick up the motorway to go to Le
Mans; home of the world-famous
24h motor race. Over a quarter
of a million people fl ood into
the Pays de la Loire each year to
watch the race, which is covered
by 2,400 journalists - it is a true
spectacle and, this year, we will
celebrate its 100-year centenary.
To me, this part of the region
