I
was born in the beautiful
town of Briare, famous for
being nestled at the end
of the Briare canal, one of
the oldest in France. Its
construction started in 1604,
and it was used to bring wine,
of course, but also timber, coal
and iron. Around ten years ago, I
moved with my family across the
departmental border to the Loiret-Cher,
close to the wonderful
Zoo de Beauval. The zoo features
35,000 animals and is spread
over 40 hectares; it is one of
the largest animal collections
in Europe. Each year it attracts
more than 1.5m visitors to the
region and is known for its work
with endangered species. It's well
worth a visit.
I am surrounded here by
the Sologne, a wild and peaceful
area that covers 5,000km² and
includes forests and no less than
2,800 ponds within the beautiful
countryside. We attract hikers
and fi shermen from all over
France, and it is a wonderful,
stress-free place to visit and live.
It's not just the rivers
themselves that are well
stocked; you will fi nd some
glorious châteaux on their
banks, Chenonceau, Chambord,
Blois, Amboise... their names roll
off the tongue. This is a region
renowned throughout the
world for the Disney-like quality
of the châteaux and beautiful
surrounding villages. If you haven't
yet been to visit, then I guarantee
you won't be disappointed.
I have been working with
Leggett for three years and
love the fact that my job allows
me to travel throughout the
region and enjoy our wonderful
landscape. You have probably
realised that we receive many
millions of tourists every year,
so the property market is ideal
for second-home owners who
can earn extra income from
seasonal rentals if they so wish.
One interesting trend has been
the increase in the number of
American buyers in the region,
taking advantage of the best
dollar/euro exchange rate for
