ouvelle-Aquitaine
is the largest region
in France, covering
84,000km², similar
to Austria and
it encompasses the old and
much loved regions of PoitouCharentes,
Aquitaine, and
Limousin. It incorporates a dozen
different departments, and we
live in Lot-et-Garonne.
We do not claim to know
it all, but when it comes to
the Lot-et-Garonne, we think
we're pretty knowledgeable.
The property market is as hot
as the weather here in summer.
It is primarily driven by French
buyers, with many from cities
like Paris, Bordeaux, and Toulouse
searching for country homes.
They are either looking to work
remotely or have somewhere
to escape during the year. Since
Covid, quality of life is considered
more important than quantity of
life and this phenomenon is not
restricted to French buyers; we
have had clients from America,
Canada, Holland, Belgium,
Switzerland, and Germany say the
same thing. And, of course, this
is still a hugely popular location
for the British. They want to
leave Brexit behind, and many
are looking for a permanent
move. The excellent French
healthcare system is also one of
the signifi cant factors for wanting
to live in France. It's not easy for
buyers, as property sells very
quickly, so be prepared to move
quickly and have your fi nancing in
place!
The Prefecture and largest city
in Lot-et-Garonne is Agen, which
sits on the river Garonne. It has
a beautiful mediaeval centre, a
12th-century cathedral, and a
glorious museum, the Musée des
Beaux Arts.
You will also fi nd some
spectacular bastide villages
which were the setting of bloody
confl icts between the French and
English during the Hundred Years'
War. Our favourites include
Monfl anquin and Pujols; both
listed amongst the Plus Beaux
Villages de France. Nip across the
border into Dordogne, and you'll
fi nd Monpazier and Villefranchede-Périgord
equally beautiful.
We can often be found at the
local markets, which are colourful,
noisy, and full of evocative scents.
You will always fi nd a local
viticulteur selling his wares, and
he will have a fi ne choice of
