Laura Bates - Meynell 2004
Laura Bates has been awarded the British Empire Medal
(BEM) in the 2015 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her
services towards equality.
Laura is a feminist writer who founded the Everyday Sexism Project in 2012, described as 'one of the biggest social media
success stories on the internet'. he project documents
experiences of sexism, harassment and assault. Laura is also
a contributor to the New York-based Women Under Siege
project, and frequently writes for he Guardian.
Commenting on the list in he Times, Valentine Low
explains: 'his year the list is one of the most feminismfriendly
ever seen. Not only are more women honoured
than men - 51 per cent - but the civil servants in charge
of the process have gone out of their way to highlight
recipients honoured for campaigning for women's equality',
stating that it represented 'quite a significant shift' and a
'deep-rooted change'.
While there appears to be a clear shift towards recognising
the achievements of women, Laura felt the figures reflects the
problem of gender inequality seen in other areas of society,
adding that the same thing is seen in the top echelons of
business and academia. However, commenting on receiving
the award, she said that she was totally surprised and very
honoured and that it was recognition of the hundreds of
thousands of people who had come forward to share their
experiences of gender inequality over the last few years.
Laura's work is an important, valuable, ground breaking
achievement and we congratulate her warmly on her
success.

Melanie Beale - Taylor 2006
One bleak and dreary November day, I remember sitting
with a friend, in a local coffee shop, trying to come up with
ideas to raise some money for St Margaret's Hospice, a local
charity that cares for hospice patients in Taunton. hey had
looked after my Mother in her final days back in 2012 and
made the entire process as easy as possible for us. Every year
since her death, my father and I have tried to raise money as
a way of repaying their kindness to us.
My friend suggested that we could run the Taunton 10k
