which to me was absolutely ludicrous! hose who remember
me from school, will know that there was NO way I could do
that, I have never and will never be a runner. I then suggested
swimming it, and this crazy idea was born!
On 29th May 2015, myself and two friends managed to
swim 10km (a total of 400 lengths)in just under 4 1/2 hours
and raising a grand total of £1073 for St Margaret's Hospice.
My sincerest thanks go to Steve Haste for giving up his time
to support my mental idea and donating both his time and
the pool to allow us to do this, to King's College for donating
the use of the pool, to Sarah and Ali who swam with me, to
Lydia my biggest supporter, and most of all to my Dad who
has supported me every step of the way.
If you still want to donate, the web link is still open:

Sophie-Marie Gross-Fengels - Carpenter 2006
I graduated from the University of Cologne with a Geography
and Economics Bachelor (b.sc.) in 2013.
Shortly after I got accepted at the RWTH Aachen University
for a Master Programme in Geography and Economics, with
a minor in Social Science.
I am currently working at the Research Institute for Regional
and Urban Development gGmbH in Aachen whilst
preparing my Masters thesis.
After the submission at the end of the year I am planning on
applying for a PhD in Economic Geography.
Ray Codd - Staff 2006
I retired July 2006 having taught Physical Education, French
and been I/C sport. I am still involved with Rugby whilst
spending the winter months in Majorca. I help coach a team
called Bahia RFC, one of six teams on the Island. In addition,
the League includes two other Islands.
I still live in Taunton, helping out in the summer months at
Somerset County Cricket Club as a steward.
My daughter Claire (ex Meynell) has lived in Majorca for the past 8 years. She worked as chef on a super yacht for 6 years
before becoming a mother to an 18 month old baby Boy,
named Jacob.
Maddie Hinch - Carpenter 2007
Maddie Hinch's heroics
played a key part in enabling
England to win their first
European Championships
for 24 years after a penalty
shoot-out. After the Dutch
had scored twice in three
minutes from penalty corners, Maddie pulled off a string
of saves to keep England in the game, before they rallied
in the final quarter scoring two goals to take it to a shootout.
Maddie was again the hero as she saved three of the
Dutch efforts enabling England to win 3-1. She put her
success down to the homework that she had done on her
opponents, saying that 'this is simply the best feeling I have
ever experienced'.
Henry Potter - King Alfred 2008
Henry Potter, OA completed
the Marathon Des Sables
It's the race that has been
dubbed "the toughest
footrace on earth", but one
that a former King's College
pupil managed to conquer.
For six days he faced sweltering
temperatures of up to 50oC as
he took on the harsh terrain of the Sahara Desert for the
250km challenge.
A schedule that included a continuous stretch of 92km in
36 hours (days 4 and 5), over sand dunes, and rocky, barren
hills in extreme heat, is in itself a daunting challenge. Add
to this the kit each runner needs to carry - a sleeping bag,
lightweight clothes for all temperatures and a 1.5l of water
each day - and the need for extreme levels of both mental
and physical preparation becomes vital. Although an
experienced runner, having completed several marathons
in the past, Henry had to complete months of intensive
training, running marathons and ultra-marathons every
other weekend. he training clearly paid off as he finished a
respectable 313th out of the 1,237 runners who completed
the race.
Arriving at the camp at the end of each day came as a relief,
despite having to share with several other tent-mates and
the odd scorpion! Henry was excited to discover that his
neighbour was none other than Exmoor-based explorer Sir
