he final week of term was about as
exciting a time as we have ever had at
King's. he weather was kind to us on the
day of our great cricket match against
the PCA Masters, with the sun appearing
as if on cue just before the game began.
hat was an enormously successful day
and I thank Leisa Lavender and her team,
and all the members of staff and pupils
who helped on the day, for ensuring
that it all went smoothly and that King's
emerged triumphant, if not on the field
then at least in terms of its reputation. It
was lovely that so many OAs were able to join us.
In typical King's fashion we segued from cricket to jazz that
evening. he jazz band have been on top form this term and
have been busy - not just in the final week, but also the week
before, when they enjoyed a very successful tour to Jersey
We also enjoyed a brilliant performance of the Junior Play,
Charlotte's Web, in the amphitheatre. I thought the cast made
excellent and creative use of the space. It was a gentle, charming
piece of theatre, a little surreal at times, and wholly wonderful.
he amphitheatre has been much used this term. Ann
Widdecombe came to speak, at the invitation of the Parents'
Association, and was well received by a good-sized audience.
On the final Tuesday Sir Garfield Sobers visited the school and
addressed pupils, staff and parents from the amphitheatre
stage.
We have had another excellent summer term of sport. I'll
mention just a few highlights here: the U14A XI cricket side
won the Somerset County tournament, beating Millfield in
the final. hey will continue in this competition next season.
he 1st XI have once again beaten all school opposition, except
for Millfield. Our girls' first tennis pair of Pearllan Cipriano and
Grace Murray won, for the second year in a row, the Loveband
Plate at the ISTA tournament at Eton. King's has been a major
force in athletics in the region once again this year. Our girls'
U15 cricket XI got to the finals of the Broderick Cup after
winning the group stage.
Parents' Day was blessed with perfect weather and I was pleased
to see many parents had taken the opportunity to watch
cricket and picnic on the grounds. Deborah Criddle MBE spoke
movingly at the prize giving ceremony of the determination
needed to overcome adversity, and Bob Coupland gave a
wonderful farewell address at the Leavers' Service.
It is always a great wrench for those of us who work in the school
to say farewell to a group of boys and girls we have got to know
so well over the years, and it is a loss we go through year after
year. I must compliment this particular Upper Sixth year group
for taking it all in the right spirit and for marking their leaving
in such a dignified way. hey are a great bunch, they have been
excellent role models and leaders,
and they are going to make a great
success of their lives. We look
forward to seeing them at King's
as OAs.
