Who can apply? How long is the Programme?
This programme is open to all Junior
Doctors, CT1 and CT2.
The programme will run twice a year on the
Ulster Hospital site allowing junior doctors
on rotational placement the opportunity to
engage at some part of their year within the
Trust.
The 10 sessions will last for one hour over
lunchtime over six months and is run twice per
year.
What does the programme involve? Programme Content
Each participant is required to:
Attend 75% of planned sessions
Undertake and present a QI Project
using IHI Quality Improvement
methodology
Complete six IHI Open School Modules
The programme sets out to enable
participants to:
Design and run a QI Project within 6
months
Demonstrate the ability to use tools to
support the analysis of the system
Draw up a range of measures properly to
demonstrate the impact of the changes on
the system
Identify and test areas for improvement
using a systematic method
Quality Improvement Project Completion of Programme
A structured approach is used for each QI
project based on the IHI Model for
Improvement. The Model is pragmatic and
orientated towards experiential learning as
it addresses three key improvement
questions associated with setting aims,
establishing measures and selecting
changes. Chosen changes are tested on a
small scale using PDSA (Plan, Do, Study,
Act) cycles.
Each participant will receive a certificate of
completion following verification that all three
mandatory components of the programme
have been met.
This programme is also aligned to the First STEP programme in Belfast and the STEP West
Programme in the Western Trust therefore if you have already undertaken any of these
programmes there is no requirement for you to repeat it.
SQE for Junior Doctors
This programme was designed to support doctors in training develop the skills and ability to run a
quality improvement project. The participants will work together to develop innovative solutions to
address common issues in relation to safety, quality of care and patient experience.
