It would be difficult to imagine a more fascinating wine-producing country than Italy.
Home to an enormous range of climates, topographies and soil types, Italy also boasts
hundreds of indigenous grape varieties with their own distinctive flavour profiles.
The best white wines in Spain and Portugal come from the coastal areas where the
heat is tempered by maritime breezes allowing the grapes to express fresh fruit and
vibrant acidity. Galicia is home to the famous Albariňo grape that flourishes in the
temperate Atlantic climate. Albariňo and associated Galician grapes works brilliantly
with the fantastic shellfish and seafood of the region. Northern Portugal has an
identical climate to Galicia; the Vinho Verdes are rarely seen here but are dry and
fresh and bristling with minerality.
