SOCIAL STUDIES ACCESS
(SCQF Level 5)
Course overview
This course is aimed primarily at adult returners but may
also appeal to students who wish to explore introductory
units in social sciences and in social care. It is designed
to provide a general introduction to social studies and will
cover Sociology, Psychology, Modern Studies, Criminology
and Social Care.
Minimum entry requirements
• National 4 English or National 5 ESOL at Grade C or
above AND three National 4 qualifications; OR
• Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

SOCIAL SCIENCES NC
(SCQF Level 6)
Course overview
This is a varied course aiming to develop your awareness
of current social issues and equip you with sound
communication skills. This could help you find a job in many
sectors like administration, business and local authority.
Minimum entry requirements
• Four National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above
including English and one social science subject such as
Sociology, Modern Studies, History, Politics, Psychology,
Philosophy, Geography, RMPS or Economics; OR
• National Qualification at SCQF level 5 in a related subject;
OR
• Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

SOCIAL SCIENCES HNC
(SCQF Level 7)
Course overview
This course provides you with sound education and
training in key areas of social science theory, research
and investigation. Key course objectives are to develop
knowledge in the social sciences; to develop analytical,
evaluative and problem-solving skills; to develop
communication skills, and to develop personal effectiveness
and critical thinking about social and cultural issues.
Minimum entry requirements
• Two Highers, one at Grade B and one at Grade C,
including English (or ESOL equivalent) and a social
science subject such as Modern Studies, Sociology,
Politics, Psychology, History, Economics or Philosophy;
OR
• National Certificate at SCQF level 6 in Social Sciences;
OR
• Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

Year 2 Direct Entry (SCQF Level 8)
Course overview
This course provides you with sound education and
training in key areas of social science theory, research and
investigation. You will develop knowledge in the social
sciences; to develop analytical, evaluative and problemsolving skills; communication skills, and develop personal
effectiveness and critical thinking about social and cultural
issues.
Minimum entry requirements
• HNC Social Sciences with 15 credits at SCQF level 7;
OR
• First year of HND Social Sciences with 15 credits at
SCQF level 7.

SOCIAL SCIENCES DIPLOMA OF HIGHER
EDUCATION
(SCQF Level 8)
Course overview
The Diploma of Higher Education in Social Sciences is
offered by the City of Glasgow College, in association with
the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. It is equivalent to
the first two years of an Honours Degree at the University of
Strathclyde and therefore allows you to apply for direct entry
to the third year of the BA Politics and/or History Degree.
In the first year you'll study History, Politics, Economics and
Psychology and in the second year Politics and History only.
Minimum entry requirements
• Four Highers, two at Grade C and two at Grade B,
including English or ESOL and two others in social
science subjects such as Sociology, Modern Studies,
History, Politics, Psychology, Philosophy and Economics
AND two National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above;
OR
• Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
