SHIPPING AND MARITIME OPERATIONS NC
(SCQF Level 6)
Course overview
This course is for anyone looking to gain the qualifications
required to apply for the SPD Marine Engineering or SPD
Nautical Science Cadet programmes. It will introduce you
to a range of topics and provide a background into how
the industry is regulated and the functions of the business
ashore and at sea. This course is an ideal first step on a
career path to working at sea as a Deck Officer or Engineer
Officer, or for working for a ship management company or
port operations.
Minimum entry requirements
• Three National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above
including Maths, Physics, or Technological Studies; OR
• Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
• If you have left school and acquired other life skills
which don't meet the qualifications above, you may
be able to gain access through to recognised prior
learning of your skills.

DECK CADET PROGRAMME SPD
(SCQF Level 8)
Course overview
This is a three year training programme providing the
necessary training and qualifications for employment as a
Deck Officer of the Watch. There are a number of elements
to the programme and also a compulsory sea time
requirement. The programme is structured into 5 phases -
3 at college and 2 at sea.
Minimum entry requirements
• Higher Maths and/or Physical Science at Grade C or
above, and National 5/GCSE or equivalent which must
include - English, Maths and Physical Science (e.g.
Physics/Chemistry/Technological Studies/Engineering
Science) and one other subject OR
• NC Shipping and Maritime Operations (SCQF level 6)
with optional Engineering Units.
• Alternative qualifications will be considered on an
individual basis in conjunction with the sponsoring
company or training provider.
Please note: You must have a sponsoring company in order
to fulfil the sea time requirement of this programme. There
are a number of UK sponsoring companies that recruit
UK/EU nationals as officer cadets. Initial applications for
this course should be submitted to a training provider or
company.

MARITIME INDUSTRY ACCESS
(SCQF Level 5)
Course overview
This access course is for anyone looking to gain the
qualifications needed to apply for the Marine Engineering or
Nautical Science Cadet Programmes.
Minimum entry requirements
• Three National 4 qualifications including Maths, Physics
or Technological Studies; OR
• Other equivalent qualifications or experience.
• If you've left school and acquired other life skills which
don't meet the qualifications above, you may be able
to gain access through to recognise prior learning of
