T
he first half of the Summer term at
King's College came to a close with
an excellent concert of both
Classical and Baroque music. Sixth
former Alex Leung opened proceedings in
the Woodard Room with a performance of
Mozart's Piano Concerto No 21 in C, and
after the interval the audience made the
short walk to the Chapel where the
Chamber Choir sang Vivaldi's Gloria.
Alex Leung, in his final year at King's, has
delighted audiences many times with his
outstanding pianistic skills. His concerto
saw him at his very best - unbelievably
fluent passagework was coupled with
innate musicianship, beautiful phrasing
and subtle rubato, never too much or overRomanticised,
but just right for Mozart.
He was ably supported by the orchestra,
with warm string playing, deft touches
from flutes and beautifully judged horn
playing - Alex's performance was rightly
rewarded with a prolonged ovation.
After the interval, the Chamber Choir
treated the audience to a powerful and
exciting rendition of Vivaldi's famous
Gloria, an extended work in twelve
separate movements. There were thrilling
sounds from sopranos, particularly in
their higher register, and powerful singing
from basses.
Fourth form pupils Antonia GartonSprenger
and Guy Fenton were a
beautifully matched pair in Laudamus te,
while sixth former Bryony House gave a
haunting performance of the Domine
Deus. Fourteen-year old Flora Davies
excelled in the Agnus Dei, and Simon
Oakley showed off his pure rounded tone
in Qui sedes.
All was brought together under the baton
of Director of Music Colin Albery - an
excellent way to start the half-term break. Late Spring Concert
