I
t was a rusty start to the season
against Clifton, but we showed plenty
of spirit, with impressive
performances from Jack Gunningham,
Luke Tomkins and Jack West. Ted Niblett
had a useful first game for King's. We
were far more impressive the next week
against Wellington, when we recorded a
comfortable 45-8 victory, marred only by
an injury to man of the match Jack West.
We found ourselves weakened by injury
against Blundell's, and were somewhat
overwhelmed in the first half. Things
picked up though after half-time, with
gutsy performances by Jack Gunningham
and Ted Niblett.
Although the final score in the
Cheltenham fixture was less than
flattering, we worked exceptionally hard
in defence, with Seb Manger and George
Williams particularly catching the eye.
The following Saturday we put in an
excellent performance to beat a tenacious
Bristol Grammar School side 31-12. The
back row of Seb Manger, George Williams
and Harry Magill was outstanding, and
Ted Niblett scored some good tries.
We did really well to record an excellent
22-3 away win against Canford, with two
first-half tries for Ted Niblett and one by
Jack West. Playing up the slope in the
second half proved harder work, but it
was a good afternoon's work nonetheless.
In a magnificent display of 15-man rugby
against Queen's, orchestrated by scrumhalf
Jack West, we overwhelmed the
opposition to win 79-0. Props Anson Lau
and Ed Kelsey showed great physicality at
the breakdown to secure a plentiful
supply of possession.
And to round things off against Taunton
School, a blistering first half gave us an
unassailable 40-point lead. Jack West
pulled all the strings, scoring three tries
and setting up two more, Jack
Gunningham had an intelligent game at
outside-centre, while Harry Magill and
George Williams were the pick of the
pack.
Junior Colts
A
fter a heavy loss to a much bigger
and more athletic Clifton side, the
Bs got their season back on track
with a dominant 43-7 win against
Wellington. Playing a superb off-loading
game, there were notable performances
from Charlie Brain and skipper Ben
Wagstaff in the backs, while among the
forwards, the back row of Ollie Guess, Ali
Day and Ben Wright caught the eye.
We put in an excellent effort at Blundell's,
but were outmuscled and outpaced by
much larger opposition, and it was pretty
much the same story at Cheltenham.
Against Bristol Grammar School though,
we turned in one of our best performances
of the season. Charlie Brain, Ben Wagstaff
and Henry Cole all ran hard at the defence
and the whole team showed great spirit.
At Canford we showed superior skills and
a greater will to win - the tries in our
29-14 win came from Jack Samuel, Max
Beale, James Crocker, Charlie Brain and
Henry Cole.
It was a slow start to the Queen's fixture,
but we eventually got into our stride to
win 48-14, and ran in some excellent
tries in the process. The best came from
skipper Ben Wagstaff, who caught the ball
inside his own half and ran powerfully
through and over despairing tacklers. And
though the As won comfortably against
Taunton School, we found ourselves up
against three very large players who
dominated the match rather!
