A
fter an initial period of early season
rustiness against Queen's, we took
the lead through two good goals by
Jack Gunningham and a third from
skipper Jack West. Luke Tomkins had a
good debut in goal, while Max Beale's
impressive effort was rewarded with a
goal as we ended 4-3 winners.
In a spectacular first half at Millfield, we
scored six unanswered goals before the
break through Cameron Smith, Jack
Gunningham, Jack West (2), Max Beale
and George Williams. In the second half
Jevon Garbutt got his name on the
scoresheet and Jack West completed his
hat-trick, as we ran out comfortable 8-1
winners.
Our excellent run continued with a
convincing 6-0 win against Taunton
School, first-half goals coming for Jack
Gunningham (2), Henry Cole, Cameron
Smith and Harry Magill. Charlie Brain
had an excellent game at right-back, and
George Williams generally got the better
of his defender - Cameron Smith slotted
home his second and the team's sixth.
A couple of unforced errors at Canford
allowed them to take a commanding lead,
but Cameron Smith eventually broke
through a well-organised defence to score
- Seb Manger was man of the match.
Henry Cole scored in the third minute
against Bryanston, but we had to wait
until early in the second half for our
second, a Harry Magill strike. Bryanston
equalised through two short corners, and
man of the match keeper Luke Tomkins
had to work hard to prevent any further
damage, before goals from Jack
Gunningham and Cameron Smith ensured
a well-deserved 4-2 win.
Both sides had scored after just three
minutes at Clifton! Johannes Stecher
then put us ahead again, while Ben
Madge and Max Beale were outstanding
in defence and the midfield never stopped
running. It was Stecher again who scored
our winner ten minutes from time. T
he Bs started in dominant fashion
against Queen's and scored first,
but we then lost our way and our
shape, and pushed forward too much
leaving the defence stranded. There was
some good hockey played though, and we
continued to show promise at Millfield,
despite conceding twice early on.
The Taunton School fixture was our best
performance of the season, when we
drew a game we should really have won,
leading 1-0 for most of the match and
looking like scoring again. Duncan
McLeod was man of the match for his
amazing work rate as sweeper.
At Canford we enjoyed the majority of
possession, but couldn't find a way to
score. Ben Wagstaff and Will Knill
though played with plenty of intensity in
the second half. By Bryanston we were
rapidly improving and at full strength, and
it showed as we ran out 5-2 winners.
Goalscorers included Jack Samuel and
Henry Biggs, while man of the match was
Jevon Garbutt.
But for the final match at Clifton we were
missing two crucial midfield players, and
were always going to struggle against a
very strong Clifton year group. But we
battled through to the end of a hugely
enjoyable season.
