Regional Audit: Where Does the Blood Go in Northern Ireland?
The Key recommendations from the audit were:
• In non-emergency transfusions, the patient's haemoglobin level should be checked
after every unit transfused and additional red cells should only be transfused if the
required threshold has not yet been achieved
• The cause of anaemia should be promptly investigated whenever possible. Any
underlying haematinic deficiencies should be corrected without delay to reduce
requirement for transfusion
• Patient blood management should be fully implemented so that the requirement for red
cell transfusion can be avoided in many patients undergoing elective surgery
• Non-urgent transfusions should be transfused within daytime working hours whenever
possible.
