'BIZ IN THE PRIS'
'Biz in the Pris' is a comic book co-produced with young
men of HMP Hydebank Wood College. Denise Lyons,
Governance Lead, led the project that demonstrates an
example of excellent frontline co-production with service
users and others.
There is a gap in the education of polysubstance misuse
danger in prison. Awareness of the link between substance
misuse and mental health is very low. Mental health and
addiction are two of the biggest contributing factors to
reoffending.
The first version of the comic book 'Craving the Blues'
demonstrates:
• Supporting people in prison who live with an addiction
• Involving service users in the development of services
• Working collaboratively with key partners.
The comic book is a humorous, relatable, amateur
publication that delivers a pertinent healthcare message to
others about the dangers of drug misuse, by bringing their
personal stories to life through storytelling and pictures and
utilising it to educate and help others in custody.
A multi-disciplinary group was involved in the project including
nurse representatives. A whole college approach was taken with
eight services being involved with no professional experience of
art/design.
'Biz in the Pris' Version 1 Craving the Blues' was published in
November 2019, the first of its kind in any prison in the UK.
Subsequently, the project won the PHA Chairman's
Involvement Award for the most innovative Community and
Voluntary Initiative 2019.
