Leading in Safety, Quality & Experience (SQE)
Programme 2018 - 2019
Our annual Safety, Quality & Experience Programme takes place over eight months in which
participants undertake a quality improvement (QI) project using a structured approach based on the
IHI Model for Improvement.
Quality Improvement models present a systematic, formal framework for establishing Quality
Improvement Processes. The Model for Improvement addresses three key improvement questions
associated with setting aims, establishing measures and selecting changes.
Using the Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) Cycle, chosen changes are tested on a small scale.
81 staff completed the programme with 42 projects being undertaken using the IHI Model for
Improvement. This year external participants from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and
Northern HSC Trust also completed the programme. Projects undertaken can be viewed through
the SQE Programme 2018/19.
On the 11 June 2019 the SQE Final Event attracted over 100 participants, mentors, guests and
staff where eight project finalists gave a ten minute presentation on their Improvement Initiative.
The winning projects at the event voted for by the audience were:
Jacinta Burke and Rachel Barber, Speech & Language Therapists
Alison Smyth, Deputy Sister Paediatrics; Joanne McClune, Sister Paediatrics;
Helen Hamilton, Staff Nurse Paediatrics; Thomas Toner, Deputy Sister
Emergency Department; Barbara Todd, Staff Nurse Rapid Response; Laura
McConaghy, Paediatric Registrar ST7
