Job shadow opportunities for healthcare workers have
been offered for a number of years. This includes nurses
returning to practice with full or half day job shadow
experience for nursing students. This year work was
undertaken with Queen's University to explore the
feasibility of offering longer placements for nursing
students.
Following an audit/assessment process by the university the Infection Prevention and Control Team
now offer six week placements to 2nd and 3rd year student nurses. It is hoped that this placement
will offer an enriching learning environment which helps to develop the future nurse's critical thinking
around Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures as a whole and embed IPC practice into
their ethos from the start of their career. This commenced in September 2019 and the first students
found their placement extremely valuable in widening their knowledge base.

The Infection Prevention & Control Nursing Team (IPCT)
In November 2019 the Infection Prevention and Control
Team (IPCT) took part in a Midwifery Careers Day. This
day was to encourage local secondary school children to
consider midwifery as a future career and gave the IPCT
an opportunity to engage with future potential healthcare
staff.
The groups were informed of how Infection Prevention and
Control Practitioners work across the whole Health and
Care system and play a key role working collaboratively
to improve the safety and quality of care delivered to all
patients.
The pupils were informed of the methods used to advise and support healthcare workers to prevent
and control the spread of healthcare-associated infection. The participants took part in a short hand
hygiene facts quiz and were then invited to check their hand washing skills using the ultra violet light
box. A variety of posters and information leaflets were on display to demonstrate the information
available for patients, staff and the public.
