District Nurses Ensuring Safety at Flu Season
Implementation of Emergency Anaphylaxis Kit
(District Nursing, Ards & North Down) September 2019
Change in practice to improve patient safety and to ensure effective
working
Following a review of the current practice of the procurement, supply and storage of Adrenaline
within the District Nursing Teams, a lack of robust governance arrangements and standardisation
of practice with regard to the procurement and storage of Adrenaline for use in the management
of anaphylaxis was identified.
Standardised containers were sourced and stocked with two ampoules of Adrenaline 1:1000,
syringes and needles.
* All staff sign for the Emergency Anaphylaxis Kits and expiry dates are checked and
recorded
* All district nursing staff now work to a standardised ISO process reducing variation and
ensuring governance
* The containers are easily identified, in the event of an emergency.
This initiative has been replicated in other District Nursing and Community Nursing Teams
throughout the South Eastern HSC Trust.
Guidance and support was gained through the Trust's Nursing and Pharmacy Governance
Leads.
