Practice Education Team
In response to the increasing numbers of pre-registration nursing and midwifery students, the
Practice Education Team have worked in collaboration with Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses to develop
and open new Practice Learning Placements for both pre and post registration students.
In partnership, over 83 Practice Learning Educational Audits have been undertaken to enable a
substantial number of clinical areas to increase student capacity.
New practice learning placements have been opened to include the Cardiac Centre and Cath Lab,
Transition Ward (UHD), Endoscopy (UHD) and Palliative Care Nursing Team.
To support both pre and post registration students in practice, we have added 67 Mentors and
21 Sign-off mentors (Nursing and Midwifery) to the register bringing our total numbers to circa 1200.
Future Nurse Future Midwife
In May 2018, the NMC published ambitious new Education Standards to shape Nursing and
Midwifery for future generations by raising the ambition of what is expected of a Nurse and a
Midwife at the point of registration.
Implementation of the new standards will commence for Nursing in September 2020 and in
September 2021 for Midwifery.
In preparation, the Practice Education Team facilitated a series of roadshows and awareness
events throughout 2019, to prepare all Nurses and Midwives for their new roles as Practice
Supervisors and Practice Assessors.
