This year funding was secured from the Regulation Quality
and Improvement Authority to undertake a Regional Audit
which was led by the Trust's Infection Prevention and
Control (IPC) and Audit Departments.
The Regional Audit focused on the equipment, policies and
training that Trusts and independent care providers had
in place for healthcare workers providing patient care and
domiciliary support.
Following the survey a report has been produced with a
number of recommendations. These will be taken forward
over the next three years.
Regional funding was also secured to review and produce IPC educational material for healthcare
workers via an eLearning platform. This is also being led by the Trust's IPC Department. This covers
general IPC principles and best practice around the management of invasive devices.
This programme is intended to support specific face-to-face training provided by IPC Teams across
the region. A Regional launch is expected in 2020.

The new Neighbourhood District Nursing Model of Care is being prototyped in Newcastle in one of
the four clusters in the Downe locality, within the South Eastern HSC Trust.
This Model is based on a new Neighbourhood District Nursing Team who are an integral part of the
enhanced Multi Disciplinary Primary Care Team. This Team takes a Public Health approach, caring
for a designated population, aligned to GP Practices, caring for all patients on the GP Register
wherever they live, promoting independence, safety, quality and experience with the ethos of home
being the best and first place of care.
The Team are supported by a District Nursing Coach and a Data Quality Officer. The Coach
works with the teams to enable them to find solutions to any challenges they face when trying to
implement changes to practice.
