Health Visiting
Breastfeeding UNICEF accreditation and going for GOLD
Child Health Services
UNICEF Accreditation.
Health Visiting was delighted to maintain its full accreditation within Community Children's Services
of UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative Status (BFI). Evidence supports that implementing and
maintaining UNICEF BFI within a Health Care Organisation has long-term health benefits for the
population.
This initiative is delivered by our Public Health Nursing Teams through encouraging and supporting
breastfeeding practice. Breastfeeding provides lifelong health benefits to babies and mothers as well
as promoting optimal mental health and development alongside relationship building.
UNICEF accreditation is achieved by following a seven point action plan. There is a rigorous audit
process and a UNICEF reassessment every 2 to 3 years to ensure standards for best practice
are maintained. This team work can only happen when staff on the ground are committed to and
supported in implementing this action plan.
It is a collaborative approach with Public Health Nursing staff and Service Leads in the South
Eastern HSC Trust and our Trust Breastfeeding Project Board and the Public Health Agency.
Positive feedback from our clients, from our recent re-accreditation illustrates how UNICEF has
become embedded in practice. This is an excellent example of how team working ensures best
practice and ultimately evidence based service delivery to our clients.
Health Visiting is looking forward to working collaboratively with Midwives, Peer Support Groups
and the Health Improvement Department to plan and achieve the prestigious UNICEF GOLD award.
