T
he Old Aluredian Club is the
alumni association of King's
College and exists to provide a
framework that will ensure
that former pupils may remain
in contact with both the
school and each other, as well as promoting
and supporting the interests of the school and
helping members in distress. The Club was
founded in 1904 and organises a Reunion
Dinner in Taunton and a London Reception
each year, together with other social and
sporting events.
Members are kept in touch by regular emails,
an annual glossy newsletter and occasional
other mailings. The Club also has a website
where members can log in and see news items
and photographs, forthcoming events, reports
of past events, read back copies of Club
newsletters, update their own contact details,
search for and request contact with other
members and much more!
The 2007 Reunion Dinner was held in
November at the school, by kind invitation of
the headmaster, and was a huge success.
Richard Biggs, headmaster, and his wife,
Sarah, were warmly welcomed by Edward
Hawkins, chairman, and the guest of honour
was Michael Rogers who recently retired as
head of English after 36 years at the school. It
is thought to be the first time the dinner has
been held in the school since World War II and
a delicious meal was provided by the King's
catering team. Many Old Aluredians attended
the Remembrance Service in the school chapel
on the following day and watched the annual
OA rugby match against Taunton Rugby Club,
roundly won by the OAs!
HMS Belfast provided a spectacular venue for
the London Reception in March 2008. OA
Sean Brennand (BF51), who served in the
Navy after leaving King's, spoke about his
memories of HMS Belfast during the reception.
Both reunions were attended by around 100
members (representing every decade from the
1940s to date!), their partners and current and
former members of staff.
OAs also attended various other events at
school and abroad, including the King's College
Hong Kong Reception in March 2008,
generously hosted by OA Victor Chu (T76) at
his offices in the International Finance Centre.
OA sporting events during the year included
rugby, soccer, golf, cricket, men's hockey and
ladies' hockey.
